MultiScope Air Traffic Control: Privacy Notice
This notice explains what personal data MultiScope Air Traffic Control (the game, its playtest and its online services) processes, why, and what your rights are. The game is developed by Dalí Klaassen & Pim van Gool ("we", "us"), who are the controllers of this data. We are based in the Netherlands and follow the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
The game itself runs on your computer. Pilot voices and voice recognition run entirely offline: your voice is never recorded, uploaded or used to train any AI model. Data only leaves your computer through the features below.
1. Live weather and live traffic (optional game modes)
When you play with live weather or live traffic switched on, the game asks our server for the current weather or real aircraft positions at your airport. Like any internet request, this reveals your IP address to our server. We do not store requests or link them to you; your IP address is only held for up to 10 minutes to limit how often one connection can query the server, so it stays available for everyone. The server sends nothing about you to the weather and traffic sources it fetches from.
2. In-game feedback (optional)
If you send feedback (F8 or the pause menu), we receive: the game version, your hardware and display information (such as graphics card, processor, memory and screen resolution), your current settings, a snapshot of the current simulation situation, recent game log output (which can include the text of voice commands the game recognised), and, only if you tick the box, a screenshot of your radar. You may optionally add a Discord username or ID so we can reply. Nothing is sent unless you press Send. Your feedback is delivered to a private channel on our Discord server. We use it only to fix problems and improve the game.
3. Connecting your Discord account (optional)
You can connect your Discord account to the game, so it can show your Discord friends and their status. When you connect, the game sends a Steam authentication ticket to our server. Our server asks Steam to confirm the ticket and that you own the game, which gives us your Steam ID. You then sign in with Discord in your browser and click Authorize. Discord tells our server your Discord user ID and username and gives it a sign-in token for the game. The same click adds you to our Discord server if you are not a member yet (you can leave it at any time in Discord). We never see your Steam or Discord password.
We keep the sign-in token for at most 10 minutes, until your game collects it, and then delete it from our server. The game stores it on your computer only. About once a week the game sends it back to our server to have it renewed by Discord. We pass it on and do not keep it. Your friends list and status go between the game and Discord directly and never reach our server.
Playtester role (playtest only). In a playtest build the same Authorize click also gives you the Playtester role on our Discord server. Steam then confirms you have playtest access instead. For the playtest we store the link between your Steam ID and Discord account, so we can grant and manage the role, recognise you on future launches and attach your Discord to feedback you send. Outside the playtest we store no such link.
4. Steam and Discord in the game
The game uses Steam for ownership, achievements and similar platform features; Valve processes that data under its own privacy policy. If the Discord app is running on your computer, the game shows what you are doing (for example the airport you control) as your Discord status; Discord processes that under its own privacy policy. You can turn off the Discord status in Discord's own activity settings.
4a. Multiplayer (optional)
When you host or join a multiplayer game, your game exchanges data directly with the other players' games: through Steam, or over your own network for a local game. This happens because you chose to play together. Our servers are not involved and we receive nothing about these games.
- The other players in a session see your Steam name and Steam ID, the positions you hold and what you do in the game. In a local game without Steam they see your computer's user name and a random number that lasts until you close the game.
- Over Steam the connection runs through Valve's relay network, so other players do not see your IP address. In a local game your IP address is shared with the host, and the host shares each player's address with the others, so the game can carry on if the host leaves.
- While you are in a session that is not invite only, your Steam and Discord status show it to your friends: the airport, your positions, the number of players and, for a Steam session, a button to join. A public session also appears in the in-game session list for every player, with the host's Steam name, the airport, the free positions and how to get in.
- If a session has a password, your game sends it to the host when you join. A host's access settings, the password included, are kept on the host's own computer between games.
- If you send feedback during a multiplayer game, it also includes which positions each player holds (by seat number, not by name) and whether your game was in step with the host's.
5. What we do not collect
No passwords, no payment or card details (purchases are handled by Steam), no government IDs, no email address unless you send us one, no voice recordings, and no analytics or advertising tracking.
6. Legal basis
- Feedback, connecting Discord and the Playtester role: your consent, given when you choose to send feedback or connect your Discord account. You can withdraw it at any time; this does not affect processing that already took place.
- Live weather and live traffic: our legitimate interest in delivering the feature you switched on and protecting the server against abuse. You can object by switching the live modes off.
7. Who processes your data
- Cloudflare hosts our server (live weather, live traffic, feedback relay, connecting Discord, the Playtester role) and stores the playtest Steam↔Discord link.
- Discord receives your feedback in our private channel, and handles the sign-in, the community server and the role.
- Steam (Valve) confirms your Steam ID and that you own the game or have playtest access.
- Google (Google Workspace) receives and stores the email you send us.
These companies may process data outside the European Economic Area, mainly in the United States. Such transfers rely on the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework or the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses.
8. How long we keep it
- IP addresses for rate limiting: up to 10 minutes.
- Feedback: deleted at most 12 months after it was sent, or earlier on request.
- The playtest Steam↔Discord link: until you disconnect, on request, or when the playtest ends.
- The game's Discord sign-in token: on our server at most 10 minutes, until your game collects it; on your computer until you disconnect.
9. Your rights
You have the right to access the data we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to restrict or object to its processing, to receive it in a portable format, and to withdraw your consent. Disconnect Discord under Settings, About / Legal signs the game out of Discord: the sign-in token is revoked at Discord and deleted from your computer. In a playtest build it also removes your Playtester role and deletes the stored link straight away. Leaving the Discord server and revoking the app under Discord → Settings → Authorized Apps also removes the connection on Discord's side.
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection authority, in the Netherlands the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens.
10. Contact
To exercise any of these rights or ask a question, contact us by email at [email protected], or via our Discord: discord.gg/BDvP6ZuY5m.
11. Changes
We may update this notice when the game changes; the "last updated" date above will change with it.
